Description:

George Inness American 1825-1894 THE RAINBOW oil on artist’s board initialed lower left G.I. Provenance: Barridoff Galleries, South Portland, Maine, August 3, 2007, no 232 to Private Collection, Savannah, Georgia. 9 1/4 x 13 1/8 Painting comes with letter from Michael Quick, the writer of the catalgue raisonne of the works of George Inness. In this letter, he comments that The Rainbow presents a dramatic scene of a storm deep in the mountain wilderness. Beyond the grassy immediate foreground, light strikes rocks in the center and low trees on the left. Farther back on the left, tall trees rise on a slope. In the middle ground on the right, light strikes the bank of a stream and the bushes near it. Behind them rise tall trees in front of a steeply rising forested slope. Flowing out of the center distance, a shallow brook meanders through the middle distance and passes over rapids, before veering toward the right and the lower right corner. Over the brook and between the facing slopes at either side can be seen a distant mountain, forested on its lower slopes, its top partially hidden in cloud. In the heavily clouded sky, a storm is clearing off toward the right, leaving the partial arc of a rainbow in the upper right. he goes on to say that Having carefully studied The Rainbow over a period of time, it is my definite opinion that The Rainbow is an authentic painting by George Inness 1825-1894. I intend to publish The Rainbow in the supplement to my catalogue raisonne of the works of George Inness.
