Rare Federal Fancy side chair, paint decorated, attributed to John Seymour Jr., Boston, Mass 1785-93 also with a small framed letter dated 1893 stating This chair was bought at Marblehead at a sale of the effects of Capt. Cooper, a well known circumnavigator of the globe. It was one of a set bought by him from Portugal 130 years ago while on one of his voyages 1893. Notes: A closely related chair, with a history of descending in the Silsbee-Derby-Crownenshield Families, is in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum. Another set is in The White House. Robert Massey Attributes these chairs to John Seymour Jr., 1785-93. Please see Robert D.
